An interpreted consultation works best when the clinician leads the conversation and the interpreter is given room to work accurately.
- Speak directly to the patient, not to the interpreter
- Use short segments and pause for the rendering
- Avoid idioms, acronyms and double questions
- Allow extra time — roughly 1.5x a standard appointment
- Check understanding by asking the patient to explain it back
